1896 was the decisive turning-point year of the Aceh War. The defection of T. Oema—who turned his Dutch-supplied modern rifles against his former patrons—confirmed the failure of the alliance policy and produced the strategic reversal that brought Van Heutsz and Dr. C. Snouck Hurgronje to power.
