Bijlage XXII — Overzicht van onze vroegere betrekkingen met Atjeh — Overzicht van onze vroegere betrekkingen met Atjeh en van den huidigen toestand in dat gewest (Survey of our former relations with Atjeh and of the current state in that territory) — is the extensive survey of the history, geography, population, administration, and economy of the Gouvernement van Atjeh en Onderhoorigheden, preserved as the twenty-second annex (Bijlage XXII) of Kruisheer’s ATJEH ‘96 — Tweede Deel on pp. 234–304, with an accompanying overzichtskaart (overview map) at 1:2,000,000 scale. The survey — covering twenty-six subsections from the Historie of Dutch-Atjeh relations to the Verschillende gegevens betreffende de jaren 1893–1912 voor Atjeh (various data concerning the years 1893–1912 for Atjeh) — extends the volume’s temporal horizon beyond the events of 1896 and embeds them in the longer trajectory of Dutch colonial administration in Atjeh down to the eve of the First World War.

The Twenty-Six Subsections

The survey is organised in twenty-six subsections, covering: (1) Historie — the history of Dutch-Atjeh relations from the earliest contacts to 1913; (2) Het Atjehsche volkskarakter — the Atjehsche national character; (3) Grootte en grenzen — the size and boundaries of the gewest; (4) Bevolking — the population; (5) Kusten — the coasts; (6) [interior geography]; (7) Mijnbouw — mining; (8) Wegen — roads; (9) Tramweg — the tramway; (10) Handel — trade; (11) Kunst en nijverheid — art and industry; (12) Landbouw, Europeesche en inlandsche cultures — agriculture, European and indigenous cultures; (13) Veeëelt — cattle-breeding; (14) Het onderwijs — education; (15) De hoofden — the chiefs; (16) De rechtspleging — the administration of justice; (17) Belastingen — taxation; (18) Landschapskassen — the landscape treasuries; (19) Staatkundige en administrative indeeling — the political and administrative division; (20) De gewapende politie — the armed police; (21) Het leger — the army; (22)–(25) Grafische voorstellingen den handel betreffend — graphical representations concerning trade; and (26) Verschillende gegevens betreffende de jaren 1893–1912 voor Atjeh — various data concerning the years 1893–1912 for Atjeh.

Significance

Bijlage XXII is significant in the documentary record of ATJEH ‘96 — Tweede Deel as the extensive survey of the huidigen toestand (current state) of the Gouvernement van Atjeh en Onderhoorigheden in 1913 — the year of the volume’s publication. The survey extends the volume’s temporal horizon beyond the events of 1896 and embeds them in the longer trajectory of Dutch colonial administration in Atjeh down to the eve of the First World War.
