C. F. A. Wagener was a Dutch 1st lieutenant of the Korps Marechaussée who was wounded in the surprise of Anak Galoeng on 29 June 1896 and killed a year later, on 25 September 1897, while leading the marechaussée pursuit on the far side of the Glé Betoes.

P. H. R. Beuming names Wagener among the officers of the marechaussée who took part in the night attack, describing him as the officer die nimmer op ‘t appel mankeerde, als er iets bijzonders te doen viel — who never failed to answer the roll when anything special was afoot.

In the fighting inside the benting he received a gunshot wound through his left hand and was at the same moment set upon with the klewang; Lieutenant Rijnen struck the assailant down. At the same instant Rijnen himself was wounded by a shot in the hip and a klewang blow across the back, whereupon Wagener shot the enemy down with two well-aimed revolver shots en redde op zijn beurt zijn collega van een wissen dood — and in his turn saved his colleague from certain death.

Death on the Glé Betoes, 25 September 1897

On 25 September 1897, while the patrol of Captain J. N. C. Baron van Heerdt was engaged at the Goeah Teroes cave, a forced labourer was sent back to Lho-Nga for reinforcement. Three brigades of marechaussée immediately marched out under Wagener’s command om te trachten aan de andere zijde van den Glé Betoes den vijand op te vangen — to try to catch the enemy on the other side of the Glé Betoes.

The brigades returned the following day. After a violent fight in the mountains the enemy had escaped, carrying his dead and wounded with him. The marechaussée patrol had likewise a sad loss to lament: Luitenant Wagener en 2 marechaussée’s sneuvelden — Lieutenant Wagener and two marechaussées were killed.

The Overzicht van Onderscheidingen printed in the 1930 jubilee number of Het Nieuws van den Dag voor Nederlandsch-Indië records under 1903 the award to 1ste Luits. Mar. C. F. A. Wagener of the knight’s cross of the Militaire Willems-Orde 4th class, together with G. K. Dijkstra and W. K. J. Stoop.
