Het Nieuws van den Dag voor Nederlandsch-Indië was a Netherlands-Indies daily newspaper which, in 1930, issued the Extra Jubileum-nummer Het Korps Maréchaussée in Atjeh to mark the fortieth anniversary of the Korps Maréchaussée te voet in Atjeh en Onderhoorigheden and the grant of a colour to that corps.
The jubilee number
The decision to devote a special number to the jubilee was explained by the paper’s Hoofdredactie (chief editorial board) in the introduction: the name Maréchaussée was “in ons Leger meer dan een klank” — in our army more than a mere sound — and the editors trusted that their readers would take note of the extra number with pleasure. The issue ran to sixteen pages and carried the paper’s own advertising, which described it as “ACTUEEL — ACTIEF — ADREM,” claimed “een uitgebreiden staf van medewerkers over de geheele wereld” (an extensive staff of contributors over the whole world), and stated that it was “gelezen van Sabang tot Merauke.” A quarterly subscription, including the illustrated weekly Woord en Beeld, cost ten guilders.
The paper’s slogan in the same issue was “ALTIJD PARAAT de Nederlandsche zaak te dienen” — always ready to serve the Netherlands cause — a formulation that locates the paper firmly within the colonial press of the Indies.
Significance
The jubilee number is the principal published source for the fortieth-anniversary celebrations of the Korps Maréchaussée, and preserves both the official history of the corps and two first-person accounts — the interview with Colonel L. A. Snell and the memoir of W. J. Mosselman — that appear nowhere else. Its Overzicht van Onderscheidingen is a consolidated register of the corps’s decorations for the whole period 1890–1930.
