Kempeesluitenant-kolonel Kempees — was the Dutch officer who wrote the bekende werk (well-known work) on the Gajoetocht of 1904 under Van Daalen. His book is, with Zentgraff’s Atjeh and the dagboek of luitenant Hoedt of the Topografische dienst, one of the three principal printed sources for the tocht. He is listed at no. 10 in the 40-year jubilee photograph of the Korps Maréchaussée of 2 April 1930„10. Luit. Kol. Kempees”.

The Gajoetocht book and its photographs

The colonne-Van Daalen set out on 18 March 1904 and ended on 3 June 1904. At each veroverde benteng — Pepareq (308 dead), Koeto Lintang (561 dead), Reket-Goip, Penampakan, Tampeng, Bambel — Van Daalen liet na de vermeestering van elke benteng de dooden tellen: zóóveel mannen, zóóveel vrouwen en kinderen. He liet zelfs toe dat, nà de verovering der bentengs de lange en breede rijen dooden werden gefotografeerd, en een paar dier foto’s zijn gepubliceerd in het bekende werk van Kempees — he even permitted that, after the conquest of the bentengs, the long and broad rows of dead were photographed, and a few of those photographs are published in Kempees’s well-known work. Wat anderen hiervan dachten liet Van Daalen onverschilig; hij voerde oorlog, deed zijn plicht, en: „advienne que pourra.” — What others thought of this Van Daalen left indifferent; he waged war, did his duty, and: let come what may.

Other sources on the tocht

Zentgraff adds that er zijn, buiten het boek van Kempees, nog andere, niet bekende bronnen waaruit men voor de historie van dien tocht kan putten — there are, outside Kempees’s book, still other, not generally known sources from which one can draw for the history of that march. He names the dagboek of the toenmalige luitenant Hoedt, van den Topografischen dienst, which welwillend te onzer beschikking werd gesteld (was kindly made available to us). Kempees’s book remains the public and printed record.

At the 1930 jubilee dinner

At the Kandoeri Rajeu — the great slametan — at the Witte in The Hague on 2 April 1930, Kempees appears in the tableau of the senior officers of the korps: „10. Luit. Kol. Kempees”, between „9. Luit. Kol. Messemackeers v. d. Graaff” and „11. Kol. v. Gheel Gildemeester”. The dinner was the herdenking van het 40-jarig bestaan van het Korps Maréchaussée — commemoration of the 40-year existence of the Korps Maréchaussée. The menu — „Kandoeri Rajeu”, in mock-Atjehsche style — listed dishes named for the places of the korps’s campaigns: „Ie etappe: Verscheidenheid van eethare rommel op de eerste ladang verzameld w.o. sjampli, lobak, boh manò…

Significance

Kempees’s bekende werk is the printed and photographically documented record of the Gajoetocht — the koloniale staatsdaad that broke the Gajoes’ resistance in 1904. Without the published photographs of the rows of dead at Koeto Lintang, the public record of the tocht would be thinner. The book is one of the three pillars — with Zentgraff and Hoedt — on which the modern history of the tocht rests.

Cited in the Maréchaussée Jubileum-nummer (1930)

The editorial of the 1930 jubilee number of Het Nieuws van den Dag voor Nederlandsch-Indië named Kempees among the authorities on the history of the Korps Maréchaussée: “Vele bladzijden der werken van dr. C. Snouck Hurgronje, G. B. Hooyer, A. Kruisheer, J. C. J. Kempees e.a. schrijvers over Atjeh zijn gevuld met de geschiedenis van wapenfeiten, volbracht door het Korps Maréchaussée” — many pages of the works of Dr. C. Snouck Hurgronje, G. B. Hooyer, A. Kruisheer, J. C. J. Kempees and other writers on Atjeh are filled with the history of feats of arms performed by the Corps Maréchaussée.
