Sumangkut was a maréchaussée of the Korps Maréchaussée who, though severely wounded in the engagement in which Captain J. Paris fell on the west coast of Atjeh during the action of 1925–1927, spotted a fleeing opponent driven out of cover and passed the alarm to Suwoek.
The incident
After the wounded Kromo-di-Koro had ordered shots to be fired into the surrounding alang-alang to flush out any concealed Atjehnese, Sumangkut “zag, als gevolg daarvan, een djahat met een klewang uit de hooge alang-alang vluchten” — saw, in consequence, an opponent flee with a klewang out of the high cogon grass. Being himself severely wounded, he could not pursue the man, and warned Suwoek, who took up the chase and brought the fugitive down fifty metres further on.
The term djahat used in the account is the corps’s word for an armed opponent — literally an evil-doer.
