The Luchtvaart-Afdeeling (Aviation Department) was the air arm of the Netherlands-Indies army to which the former Maréchaussée sergeant W. J. Mosselman transferred in 1916, and in which he became, with W. Leendertz, one of the first two Netherlands-Indies military aviators to hold the international flying licence.
Mosselman’s transfer
The 1930 Maréchaussée jubilee number records that Mosselman, having served with the Korps Maréchaussée from December 1906 to January 1912 and risen through the ranks to onderluitenant, transferred in 1916 to the Luchtvaart-Afdeeling. He and the former captain of Artillery W. Leendertz were the first two military aviators to obtain the Internationaal vliegbrevet.
On his retirement in 1922 Mosselman was retained for the army as reserve lieutenant for special services.
