Van Gheel Gildemeester — luitenant Van Gheel Gildemeester — was the Dutch maréchaussée-officer who, in August 1902, came with 40 men to the rescue of the European soldier Fortier’s broken detachment after the Simpang Olim klewangaanval near Meunasah Djeuro. He appears at no. 11 in the 40-year jubilee photograph of the Korps Maréchaussée of 2 April 1930 — „11. Kol. v. Gheel Gildemeester”.
The Simpang Olim klewangaanval, August 1902
In August 1902 T. Tjhi Toenong — then the most enterprising and stout-hearted of the Atjehsche aanvoerders — was hem uit spionnenberichten bekend, langs welken weg een transport onder dekking van 20 bajonetten van Simpang Olim zou marcheeren, en hij legde eene hinderlaag in de hooge alang-alang naast het pad nabij Meunasah Djeuro (it was known to him from spies’ reports by which road a transport, under cover of 20 bayonets, would march from Simpang Olim, and he laid an ambush in the high alang-alang beside the path near Meunasah Djeuro). Daar vielen zijn mannen onverwacht met den klewang den troep op het lijf, en sloegen hem volkomen uit elkaar. — There his men suddenly fell with the klewang on the troop and shattered it completely. In den eersten aanloop sneuvelden 7 militairen en werden de commandant met 2 man gewond. Geheel verbijsterd namen 3 Inlandsche militairen de vlucht, doch een kranig Europeesch soldaat, Fortier, wist het povere restje van het detachement bijeen te houden tot luitenant Van Gheel Gildemeester met 40 man te hulp kwam. Intusschen waren de aanvallers verdwenen met medeneming van 5 onzer geweren. — In the first onset 7 soldiers fell and the commander and 2 men were wounded. Three Native soldiers, completely bewildered, took flight, but a brave European soldier, Fortier, kept the poor remnant of the detachment together until lieutenant Van Gheel Gildemeester came to the rescue with 40 men. Meanwhile the attackers had disappeared, taking five of our rifles.
In the 1930 jubilee photograph
At the 40-year jubilee dinner of the Korps Maréchaussée at the Witte in The Hague on 2 April 1930, Van Gheel Gildemeester appears at no. 11 in the tableau — between „10. Luit. Kol. Kempees” and „12. Professor van Vuuren”. The dinner, a Kandoeri Rajeu — a great slametan — was the herdenking van het 40-jarig bestaan van het Korps Maréchaussée (commemoration of the 40-year existence of the Korps Maréchaussée).
Significance
Van Gheel Gildemeester’s te hulp komen with 40 men — the prompt relief of Fortier’s remnant — is one of the small episodes of the Simpang Olim affair that the official record keeps. The photographs of the 1930 jubilee show him surviving into the front rank of the korps’s seniors, a Kolonel v. Gheel Gildemeester of the old Atjeh school.

The Overzicht van Onderscheidingen printed in the 1930 jubilee number of Het Nieuws van den Dag voor Nederlandsch-Indië records under 1910 the award to Kapt. Mar. F. P. A. van Gheel Gildemeester of the knight’s cross of the Militaire Willems-Orde 4th class, together with Onderluit. Mar. A. H. C. Roelofsen.
