W. Muurling was the captain of the General Staff whom H. N. A. Swart sent to the Gajò Loeös with the 1st Division of the Korps Marechaussee when resistance revived there after painful setbacks of the infantry garrison, and who as Civil Authority at Blang Kedjeren restored order with his two well-known Atjeh lieutenants Snell and Van Eck.
The Gajò Loeös
The situation was most unfavourable in September 1909: throughout the sub-division bands of ill-disposed men wandered, terrorising the population and threatening with death everyone on good terms with the administration. “With this in view the infantry garrison of Blang Kedjerèn was replaced by military constabulary (the first division under captain Muurling), while a mobile column of three brigades (under Kaniess) was sent to the western part of the sub-division.”
Du Croo recorded Swart’s practice of putting the right man in the right place: “when, after some painful setbacks of the infantry garrison, the resistance in the Gajò Loeös flared up again, he sent the 1st Division there under the command of the General Staff captain Muurling, who with his two well-known Atjeh lieutenants Snell and Van Eck soon restored order.”
In May 1911 the Kedjoerön Petiambang and fourteen prominent chiefs visited, under Muurling’s leadership, the jaarmarkttentoonstelling at Koeta Radja; the administration was temporarily conducted by lieutenant Snell, who while acting brought in eight more uitgewekenen and four muzzle-loaders. During that visit Rödjö Tjoet Pasér with his panglimas and the blah-heads of Pasér and Reröbö solemnly begged the Governor’s forgiveness.

The Overzicht van Onderscheidingen printed in the 1930 jubilee number of Het Nieuws van den Dag voor Nederlandsch-Indië records under 1914 the appointment of Kapt. Mar. W. Muurling as knight in the Orde van Oranje-Nassau.
