Kaniess is a subject named in General Swart, Pacifier of Atjeh (1943) by M. H. du Croo, in connection with the history of Atjeh and the governorship of H. N. A. Swart.

Account in du Croo’s Generaal Swart (1943)

From W. Muurling

The situation was most unfavourable in September 1909: throughout the sub-division bands of ill-disposed men wandered, terrorising the population and threatening with death everyone on good terms with the administration. “With this in view the infantry garrison of Blang Kedjerèn was replaced by military constabulary (the first division under captain Muurling), while a mobile column of three brigades (under Kaniess) was sent to the western part of the sub-division.”

From Gajòlanden

In 1908 and 1909 the situation remained “beslist ongunstig”: the keudeh with pasar shed at Blang Kedjerèn was burned, well-disposed chiefs were murdered, and repeated klewang attacks were made on brigades supervising road work or escorting transport. The situation was worst in September, bands of ill-disposed men wandering throughout the sub-division, terrorising the population and threatening with death everyone on good terms with the administration. The infantry garrison of Blang Kedjerèn was therefore replaced by marechaussée — the 1st Division under captain W. Muurling — while a mobile column of three brigades under Kaniess was sent to the western part.

From Blang Kedjerèn

In September 1909, the situation being at its most unfavourable, the infantry garrison of Blang Kedjerèn was replaced by marechaussée — the 1st Division under captain W. Muurling — while a mobile column of three brigades under Kaniess was sent to the western part of the sub-division. At the end of November H. N. A. Swart visited the district and could already visit gampongs two hours from Blang Kedjerèn without military escort. Jhr. J. J. Boreel served as Civil Authority at Blang Kedjeren, as did captain W. Muurling.

Entry in the Maréchaussée register of honours (1930)

The Overzicht van Onderscheidingen printed in the 1930 jubilee number of Het Nieuws van den Dag voor Nederlandsch-Indië records under 1925 the appointment of Kapt. Mar. P. W. F. Kaniess as Officer in the Orde van Oranje-Nassau — the only entry for that year.
