South and East Division of Borneo was the South and East Division of Borneo, of which H. N. A. Swart was Civil and Military Resident from 3 March 1905 and where he was promoted Luitenant-kolonel on 24 October 1905.
He held the post at 1,250 guilders a month with the title Civiel en Militair Resident der South and East Division of Borneo. His conduct there and in Celebes in the years 1905–1908 formed the citation for his promotion to Commander of the Militaire Willemsorde. The South and East Division of Borneo was among the first territories opened under the Korte Verklaring, with Djambi, Korintji and Midden Sumatra.
Maréchaussée brigades sent to Borneo (1905)
the 1930 jubilee number of Het Nieuws van den Dag voor Nederlandsch-Indië cites the Southern and Eastern Division of Borneo as the leading instance of the Korps Maréchaussée rendering extraordinary services outside Atjeh: “De Maréchaussée bewees ook buiten Atjeh haar buitengewone diensten, zooals in de Z. en O. Afdeeling van Borneo, waarheen in 1905 drie brigades werden gedirigeerd, wien ‘t mocht gelukken den pretendent-sultan onschadelijk te maken” — the Maréchaussée proved its extraordinary services outside Atjeh as well, as in the Southern and Eastern Division of Borneo, whither three brigades were directed in 1905, to whom it fell to succeed in rendering the pretendent-sultan harmless.
The despatch illustrates the transferability of the methods the corps had developed in Atjeh — small, mobile, lightly armed brigades operating on local intelligence — to other theatres of colonial warfare.
