Account in du Croo’s Generaal Swart (1943)

From South and East Division of Borneo

He held the post at 1,250 guilders a month with the title Civiel en Militair Resident der South and East Division of Borneo. His conduct there and in Celebes in the years 19051908 formed the citation for his promotion to Commander of the Militaire Willemsorde. The South and East Division of Borneo was among the first territories opened under the Korte Verklaring, with Djambi, Korintji and Midden Sumatra.

From Korte Verklaring

With the Korte Verklaring (“Short Declaration”) the “Sesam opent U!” was applied at an ever-quickening tempo, faster as confidence in Dutch strength increased: Djambi, Korintji, Midden Sumatra and the South and East Division of Borneo opened the series. As soon as van Heutsz took office as Governor-General in 1904, supported by the minister of Colonies Idenburg, the tempo was accelerated further, so that on his retirement he could acknowledge with satisfaction that the task was accomplished and Sumatra wholly brought under Dutch authority.

As soon as van Heutsz took office as Governor-General in 1904, supported by the minister of Colonies Idenburg, the tempo was accelerated still further, so that at his retirement he could acknowledge with satisfaction that the task had been accomplished and Sumatra wholly brought under Dutch authority.
