Rijnen was a Dutch lieutenant of the Netherlands Indies Army who commanded the platoon of fusiliers, armed with repeating rifles, that strengthened the marechaussée in the surprise of Anak Galoeng on 29 June 1896, and who was the only officer severely wounded in that action.
P. H. R. Beuming calls him den dapperen luitenant Rijnen. In the fighting inside the benting he struck down the Acehnese who had set upon Lieutenant Wagener with the klewang; at the same moment Rijnen himself was wounded by a shot in the hip and a klewang blow across the back, and Wagener in his turn shot down the assailants with two revolver shots and saved him from certain death.
Of the four officers wounded in the action, Beuming records, was alleen de luitenant Rijnen zwaar gewond — only Lieutenant Rijnen was severely wounded — while the wounds of the twenty-nine marechaussées all proved not life-threatening.

The Overzicht van Onderscheidingen printed in the 1930 jubilee number of Het Nieuws van den Dag voor Nederlandsch-Indië records under 1898 the award of the Eeresabel to 1ste Luits. Mar. K. J. C. Rijnen and F. Darlang — the same year in which Darlang also received the Militaire Willems-Orde 4th class.
