1898 was the decisive turning-point year of the Aceh War. Three closely spaced government decisions in March 1898—the approval of the Pidië Expedition (5 March), the appointment of Dr. C. Snouck Hurgronje as adviser (15 March), and the appointment of Van Heutsz as civil and military governor (25 March)—formalised the transition from the failed alliance and negotiation policies of the previous decades to the active subjugation strategy that would finally break the resistance in Groot-Atjeh.

The collaboration between Van Heutsz and Snouck Hurgronje established the model for Dutch pacification: military execution guided by ethnographic and religious intelligence.
Consequences
The events of 1898 set in motion the five-year campaign that culminated in the unconditional submission of Panglima Polim in 1903. The consolidation of Dutch authority over the Onderhoorigheden—achieved through the successes of 1898—laid the foundation for the further extension of Dutch effective authority to other regions of the Buitenbezittingen after 1902.
