16 November is the date of the first sitting of the Atjeh debate in the Tweede Kamer in 1897, held during the general deliberations on the budget of Nederlandsch-Indië for 1898.
The sitting of 16 November 1897
The sitting is headed in the pamphlet Atjeh in de Tweede Kamer (1897) as Vergadering van Dinsdag 16 Nov. 1897. On that day H. van Kol, deputy for Enschedé, delivered the long historical indictment of Dutch policy in Atjeh since 1824 and tabled his motion for a commission of enquiry.
There followed on the same day the speeches of Pijnacker Hordijk; of Verhey on the capacity of the Indies army and the beri-beri mortality; of Kuyper, printed under the heading Een Christen aan het woord; of Van der Zwaag; of Bahlmann on the two founding errors of the war; of Van Karnebeek; of Pyttersen with the precedent of Bondjoe; of De Visser; of Van Vlijmen; and of Troelstra on the economic interests behind the war. The Minister of Colonies Cremer replied at length on the same day.
The debate was resumed and concluded on 17 November 1897.

On this date in 1882 the Kamer-debate on the worrying state of Atjeh produced the statements of minister de Brauw (see 1882) and the warning of Rutgers van Rozenburg about the blood yet to be shed.
