The Nieuwe Rotterdamsche Courant was the leading Dutch liberal daily of Rotterdam, which appears in both of the books here treated: as the paper whose report of the resignations of J. T. Cremer gave Troelstra his charge of 1897, and as the paper for which C. Graadt van Roggen wrote the three letters on Atjeh reprinted in 1934.
In the Atjeh debate of 1897
Troelstra told the chamber on 16 November 1897: “hebben wij niet terstond na de benoeming van dezen Minister in de Nieuwe Rotterdamsche Courant kunnen lezen, dat deze Minister niet alleen was afgetreden als voorzitter van het bestuur van de Koninklijke, maar bovendien als voorzitter van commissarissen der Deli Maatschappij, als commissaris van de spoorwegmaatschappij, als commissaris van de Senembah en van de Medan-maatschappij?” From this he inferred that the minister must be particularly well informed about the connection between Dutch capital on the East Coast of Sumatra and the conquest of Atjeh.
On 17 November Troelstra returned to the paper in another connection, observing that the minister had treated the motion in a manner praised by the Nieuwe Rotterdamsche Courant “met die geringschatting… die zij volgens dat blad verdient,” — with that disparagement… which, according to that paper, it deserves, and attributing to that disparagement the weakness of the minister’s arguments.
The Graadt van Roggen letters of 1933
The pamphlet Een strijd in Atjeh (1934) reprints three letters written for the Nieuwe Rotterdamsche Courant by C. Graadt van Roggen, who after a short period of journalism in the Indies was returning to his former function, “een redacteurschap bij de Nieuwe Rotterdamsche Courant.” The foreword to the pamphlet was written by H. Wanting, described on the title-page as “Redacteur „Nieuwe Rotterdamsche Courant”.” The letters record the conversations aboard the Baloeran with Dr. J. Tijssen on his eye-surgery campaigns in the kampongs of Atjeh.
