Senembah Maatschappij was a tobacco and later rubber plantation company on Sumatra’s East Coast that emerged in 1889 from the enterprise of Näher and Grob, who had opened the Tandjong Morawa plantation on the Deli–Serdang border in 1871. Näher and Grob had originally intended to grow nutmeg at Tandjong Morawa, but when that plan proved unworkable they converted to tobacco, becoming one of the foundational companies of the northern Sumatra plantation economy.
Origins at Tandjong Morawa
In 1871, the same year that the Deli Maatschappij — which had itself been founded only in 1869 as the first naamlooze vennootschap in the Indies — appointed the first doctor on the East Coast, the German planters Näher and Grob opened the Tandjong Morawa plantation on the border between the Landschappen (self-governing territories) of Deli and Serdang. Their initial intention was to cultivate nutmeg. When this proved unprofitable, they transitioned to tobacco — the crop that was transforming the entire East Coast under the pioneering work of Jacobus Nienhuys and the organizational support of what would become the Deli Planters Vereeniging (founded 23 April 1879).
Corporate emergence, 1889
In 1889, Näher and Grob’s Tandjong Morawa plantation was formally incorporated as the Senembah Maatschappij. The year is noted by Dr. T. Volker as significant also for the founding of the Deli Planters Vereeniging’s first missionary to the interior workers on the instigation of J. T. Cremer, and for the elevation of the Sultan of Langkat from Radja to Sultan in 1887 (Volker’s nearby context).
Role in the East Coast economy
The Senembah Maatschappij became one of the major tobacco companies of the Oostkust, joining the Deli Maatschappij and later rubber ventures in dominating the northern Sumatra plantation economy. Dr. T. Volker notes that the rubber plantations opened by several tobacco companies — including the major players of the East Coast — were financed “wholly… with money reserved from tobacco profits,” confirming the Senembah’s trajectory from tobacco pioneer to diversified plantation enterprise.
