16 May is the date on which, according to the report in De Kroniek of that day cited by H. van Kol in the Tweede Kamer, the Acehnese chief Toekoe Tjoet Machmoed Lam Tenzah was killed with his wife, his children and seven followers as they slept, by volleys fired through the thin walls of their dwelling.
The event of 16 May 1897 is narrated at Killing of Toekoe Tjoet Machmoed Lam Tenzah (16 May 1897). Van Kol adduced it in the Atjeh debate of 16 November 1897 as evidence of the demoralisation produced by the Atjeh-oorlog, adding that he would keep silence about further abominable facts at his disposal, having enough in these for his purpose.

On this date in 1885 the patrol under luitenant Nyland between Lamara and Kota Radja lost two dead and seven wounded (see Guerilla raids inside the concentration line (1885)).
