Luitenant Nyland was a Dutch lieutenant of the garrison of the concentrated line at Atjeh in 1885, twice named in the incident-list kept by majoor Perelaer of what befell the Dutch inside their line in that year. During the ground-clearing (terrein opruimen) in the VI Moekims the workers were fired upon and four men were wounded, among them luitenant Nyland; on 13 May 1885 a patrol of 21 men under luitenant Nyland, marching between Lamara and Kota Radja, fell upon the enemy and lost two killed and seven wounded, of whom three of the wounded died afterwards (see Guerilla raids inside the concentration line (1885)).
