De Kroniek was a Dutch weekly cited twice by H. van Kol in the Atjeh debate of 1897 as a source of information on the conduct and the cost of the Atjeh-oorlog.
The report of 16 May 1897
The first citation is the report of the killing of Toekoe Tjoet Machmoed Lam Tenzah. Van Kol quoted from De Kroniek of 16 May 1897 the account of the killing of that chief with his wife, children and seven followers as they slept, by volleys fired through the thin walls of the dwelling until every sound was silenced and they “een reiswijzer naar betere gewesten hadden verkregen.”
The financial calculation of 10 October 1897
The second citation is the calculation of the annual cost of the war, given in De Kroniek of 10 October 1897. Van Kol quoted it: “Als men de traktementen der officieren, de soldijen der manschappen, den geneeskundigen dienst en het troepen- en goederenvervoer bijeentelt, was de uitgave voor den Atjeh-oorlog in 1871 f 9.947.030, doch in 1895 gestegen tot f 18.176.000 of f 8.230.000 hooger, waarvan veilig zes millioen kon worden aangenomen als jaarlijks ten goede komende aan particuliere stoombooten en leveranciers van levensmiddelen, ten behoeve van den Atjeh-oorlog, in de zakken van welke laatsten ook het grootste gedeelte van de geenszins ruime traktementen der officieren en soldaten verdwijnt.”
The same passage supplied Van Kol with the observation that there had been years — such as 1876 — in which a million and a half was spent monthly on Atjeh, of which the interested parties enjoyed about a third; and with the remark that the suppliers of coal also did good business and would regret the ending of the war, “zoodat het de vraag is van wie men bij het beslist eindigen van den Atjeh-oorlog eerder een opstand had te duchten, van de Javanen of van de Europeanen op Java.” — so that it is a question from whom, on the definitive ending of the Atjeh war, one would sooner have a rising to fear — from the Javanese or from the Europeans on Java.
