The Voorzitter der Tweede Kamer — the President of the Second Chamber of the Staten-Generaal — presided over the Atjeh debate of 16–17 November 1897 and intervened three times in its course.
Interventions in the debate
On 16 November, when Van der Zwaag asked whether Van Kol’s motion might already be discussed, the President answered that the motion had been placed on the order of the day by the chamber.
On 17 November, during Troelstra’s explanation of his reasons for naming the former directorships of the Minister Cremer, the President twice called him to order: “Ik kan den geachten spreker aldus niet laten voortgaan,” and again, after interruptions from the benches, “Ik verzoek, dat de leden den spreker niet interrumpeeren, en dat deze met zijne rede voortga,” — I request that the members do not interrupt the speaker, and that he continue with his speech, followed by the request “Ik verzoek den spreker niet over de interruptiën uit te weiden, maar met zijne rede voort te gaan en bij het onderwerp te blijven.” — I request the speaker not to expatiate on the interruptions, but to continue with his speech and to keep to the subject.
In the division
The President is recorded among the seventy-two members who voted against the motion on 17 November 1897, the division list closing with the words “en de Voorzitter.”
