Du Croo drew attention to two peculiarities of this episode. The first was that six weeks of Atjeh service “dat is alles!” — that was the whole of it — for a man who would become one of the Indies’ foremost Buiten-mannen (Outer-Provinces men); until his promotion to captain in the transitional year 1898 Swart obstinately remained on Java and in the vredesgarnizoenen (peace garrisons). The second was that in those young years the pull towards the buitengewesten was simply absent: Swart preferred to lay “een draagvlak” for later years, to learn everything he could within the military framework, with the Hoogere Krijgsschool in the background.
