On 22 November 1898 — in the midst of the hard fighting and continuous extension of Dutch authority under the new governor Van Heutsz — Swart was posted to Atjeh for the second time, as captain in the 7th Battalion of Infantry, then quartered with three companies at Sigli and one company in a bivouac some hours outside it. That detached company, composed of Sundanese — a people with few representatives in the army — was assigned to him.
