De Sociaaldemokraat was the organ of the Sociaaldemokratische Arbeiderspartij in Nederland, advertised on the closing leaf of Atjeh in de Tweede Kamer (1897).
The notice reads: “De Sociaaldemokraat. Orgaan der Sociaaldemokratische Arbeiderspartij in Nederland. Verschijnt tweemaal per week. Redactie: Mr. P. J. Troelstra en W. H. Vliegen. Bureau van Administratie: Zwaanshals 127, Rotterdam. Prijs 60 cent per kwartaal.” (The Social Democrat. Organ of the Social-Democratic Workers’ Party in the Netherlands. Appears twice a week. Editors: Mr. P. J. Troelstra and W. H. Vliegen. Administration office: Zwaanshals 127, Rotterdam.)
The paper appeared twice weekly under the joint editorship of Troelstra — the deputy for Tietjerksteradeel who spoke at length in the Atjeh debate — and W. H. Vliegen. Its administration at Zwaanshals 127, Rotterdam, was one of the three addresses from which the party’s Atjeh pamphlet could be ordered, the others being the party treasurer at Utrecht and the publisher J. A. Fortuijn at Amsterdam.
The paper was the natural vehicle for the agitational campaign Troelstra announced in the debate: to traverse the whole of the Netherlands, its towns, villages and hamlets, to rouse the people against the injustice committed in Atjeh for twenty-four years.
