An illiterate man of Gayo origin who in 1898 roused a tumult by claiming to be Malem Diwa returned to earth, or at least clothed with his authority, promising invulnerability and victory over the Dutch. Initially successful, he was defeated and disappeared, reappeared in 1899 with Gayo followers, was defeated again, and was slain near Piadah in 1900.
