Account in du Croo’s Generaal Swart (1943)
By royal decree of 13 July 1900 H. N. A. Swart was promoted Knight 3rd Class of the Militaire Willemsorde. He remained on operations in Atjeh until May 1900, was granted a year’s European leave on 6 July and departed on 18 July aboard the s.s. Lawoe. Dutch colonial administration in the Buitengewesten could, du Croo argued, be set as an example to all colonial powers after 1910; before 1900 the Netherlands Government “by no means felt itself the fairy-tale prince”.
