The fictional birthplace of Malem Diwa, the immortal hero of the most popular Achehnese hikayat. ‘Malem Diwa was the son of Raja Tampo’, a prince who ruled in the gampong of Piadah on the Krueng (river) of Pase, commonly known as Pase.’ His mother was brought back to Malem Jawa (close to Piadah) after marriage. Historically, Teungku Tapa (an adventurer from Telog in the Gayo country who claimed to be Malem Diwa) was killed in 1900 in a skirmish with the Dutch troops near Piadah (Pase).
Referenced in sadati dialogue as a destination: ‘If that please thee not, blessed little brother, I shall take thee to the country of Piadah. Brothers, I will not live in the country of Piadah; I will go further off; I will start now.’ Idi (vulg. Edi) A mart on the East Coast. Sadati dialogue: ‘If that suit thee not, little brother sadati, go yonder to Idi (vulg. Edi) that great mart. I will not live at Idi, brothers; Teuku Nya’ Paya is a raja who cannot be trusted.‘
