Account in du Croo’s Generaal Swart (1943)
From H. N. A. Swart
Swart remained continuously on operations in Atjeh until May 1900, when he was transferred to Buitenzorg in connection with his application for leave. There he heard indirectly that, though barely two years a captain, he had already been declared fit for major. His corps commander nevertheless “tested” the prospective leave-taker according to the rules of the trade — battalion school, field service, drill, administration — until he embarked on 18 July aboard the s.s. Lawoe and disappeared for a year. He had been granted a year’s European leave on 6 July 1900 with retention of claim to promotion.
From H. N. A. Swart
Before departure Swart stayed at the palace at Buitenzorg, where Van Heutsz — feeling himself so often a prisoner of that palace — took him incognito to Batavia for an evening at the Restaurant Versteeg opposite Hotel De Nederlanden, “Haroun al-Rashid and his vizier”; the disguise failed, as ever more polite passers-by came to look at the Governor-General. Van Heutsz’s parting words were: “one thing more … you have only to see to it that what happened to Van Daalen does not happen to you!” Swart answered: “I have a different character from Van Daalen.” “Accoord,” Van Heutsz replied, “I count on it, then, that Atjeh will come right. And then we shall say no more about it.”
