The Maatschappij “Nederland” (the “Netherlands” Company) was a Dutch shipping line that, in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, operated the mail and passenger service between the Netherlands and Nederlandsch-Indië. The company’s steamships carried the metropolitan officers detached to the Nederlandsch-Indisch Leger for the Atjeh-oorlog, including Tweede-Luitenant C. J. Snijders, who sailed from Nieuwediep on 10 July 10 July 1873 on the steamship Conrad (2500 tons, still fitted with sail for use in fair winds) for Batavia, where he arrived on 31 August 31 August 1873 after seven and a half weeks. Snijders returned to Europe on the company’s Koning der Nederlanden in August–September 1875.
The Conrad Voyage of July–August 1873
The Conrad left Nieuwediep on 10 July 10 July 1873 carrying a reinforcement detachment of 400 men with their officers, a number of officers returning from European leave, and most of the metropolitan officers being detached to the Nederlandsch-Indisch Leger for the second Aceh expedition — among them Snijders and J. W. N. Cramer. Prince Hendrik, brother of the King, saw the troops off, dining on board and addressing the departing officers before returning to shore. In the Bay of Biscay the Conrad suffered storm damage and put in at Gibraltar for ten days of repair; under the guidance of Kolonel G. P. de Neve the officers made an excursion to Tangier. After Gibraltar the Conrad called only at Port Said and Aden, and reached Batavia on 31 August 31 August 1873.
The Return Voyage of August–September 1875
Snijders left Olehleh on 4 August 4 August 1875 on the steamship Atjeh of the Nederlandsch-Indische Stoomvaartmaatschappij, called at Penang and Singapore, and reached Batavia on 14 August 14 August. After a few days at Buitenzorg he sailed for Europe on the Koning der Nederlanden of the Maatschappij “Nederland” on 26 August 26 August, reaching Naples on 30 September 30 September and continuing overland to his parents’ house at ‘s-Gravenzande on 22 October 22 October 1875.
