Account in du Croo’s Generaal Swart (1943)

From H. N. A. Swart

He kept up his correspondence with the humblest of his old subordinates. A letter of 19 February 1937 to the Ambonese old soldier Jacob Lawalata, celebrating on 26 February 1937 his thirty-fifth year as a Knight of the Militaire Willemsorde (“Military William Order”) at Jogjakarta, is reproduced in facsimile in the biography; a letter to Swart from his old brigade commander W. J. Mosselman, written from De Hoenderhof at Tandjoengsari near Bandoeng on 12 September 1936, is printed beside it.

From Militaire Willemsorde

H. N. A. Swart was appointed Knight 4th Class by royal decree of 30 August 1891 no. 2 for his conduct in Atjeh in 1890; Knight 3rd Class by decree of 13 July 1900 no. 29 for the operations of 1899; and Commander by decree of 2 September 1909 no. 41 for the Soembawa operations of 1908. Many of his subordinates named in du Croo’s book were knights of the order, several with the Eeresabel: H. J. Schmidt, W. B. J. A. Scheepens, F. Darlang, Th. J. Veltman, A. Geertsema Beckeringh, G. F. B. Watrin, J. J. Boreel, A. H. C. Roelofsen, F. P. A. van Gheel Gildemeester, H. Behrens, W. J. Mosselman, M. Schouten, C. A. Snell, G. F. P. Gosenson, G. K. W. F. de Vaynes van Brakell Buys and J. H. C. Vastenou. The sergeants Loeff and Roobaart earned it in the destruction of the band of Tgk. Léjman in 1911. The Ambonese old soldier Jacob Lawalata celebrated thirty-five years as a knight in 1937.

From 1937

In 1937 T. Radja Sabi at last became oelèëbalang of Keureutòë, the office of which his father T. Tjhi’ Toenòng had been deprived in 1899. In 1937 the head of the Samarkilang-bende, formed from the last followers of Tgk. di Mata Ië, was captured — twenty years after the Teungkoe’s death. On 19 February 1937 H. N. A. Swart wrote to the Ambonese old soldier Jacob Lawalata, who celebrated his thirty-fifth year as Knight of the Militaire Willemsorde at Jogjakarta on 26 February 1937. Up to the end of 1937 Atjeh had issued sixty-nine agricultural concessions covering 71,069 hectares, seventy-four leasehold parcels covering 67,287 hectares and thirteen option parcels covering 287,000 hectares.
