He kept up his correspondence with the humblest of his old subordinates. A letter of 19 February 1937 to the Ambonese old soldier Jacob Lawalata, celebrating on 26 February 1937 his thirty-fifth year as a Knight of the Militaire Willemsorde (“Military William Order”) at Jogjakarta, is reproduced in facsimile in the biography; a letter to Swart from his old brigade commander W. J. Mosselman, written from De Hoenderhof at Tandjoengsari near Bandoeng on 12 September 1936, is printed beside it.

Mosselman later transferred to the flying service and was pensioned as onderluitenant with the rank of second lieutenant. He remained in touch with his old chief. On 12 September 1936 he wrote to Swart from De Hoenderhof at Tandjoengsari near Bandoeng, timing the letter for the mail boat of 16 September which by the table would arrive in the Netherlands on 11 October, so that it would lie in the letter-box exactly on Swart’s birthday; the letter closed “uw oud-brigadecommandant, Mosselman,” with the promise of drinking an otherwise forbidden oorlam to His Excellency’s health on 12 October.

On 7 March 1936 Governor Van Aken handed over the government of Atjeh to Resident Jongejans, declaring the sub-divisions Alaslanden, Lam Meulò, Meulaboh and Tapa’ Toean — the last still governed by officers — fully ripe for civil administration: “the keystone of the pacification”. On 12 September 1936 W. J. Mosselman wrote to Swart from Tandjoengsari. In 1936 the son of T. Tjhi’ Béntara was suspended as oelèëbalang of Keureutòë. H. T. Damsté’s Drie Atjehmannen appeared in the Koloniaal Tijdschrift of 1936–1938.
