In March 1898, the civil and military command of Atjeh was given to General J. B. van Heutsz, partly on Snouck Hurgronje’s insistence - Snouck found in Van Heutsz the right man and supporter for a policy of unweakened action to the end. From then on, the enemy was actively combated and given no rest. The action took place in territory already declared Dutch in 1873.
