Military Career and Service in Aceh

Snouck Hurgronje lived in Aceh and wrote extensive academic studies on Acehnese society, law, and religion. His strategic recommendation to bypass traditional secular chieftains (uleebelang) and ruthlessly target religious leaders (ulama) provided the intellectual blueprint for Van Heutsz’s offensive campaigns and the operations of the Korps Maréchaussée.
