Verspreide Geschriften IV was the fourth volume of the collected writings of Christiaan Snouck Hurgronje, in which his formula for the pacification of Atjeh and his condemnation of H. N. A. Swart both stand recorded.
Snouck’s formula, quoted throughout Generaal Swart, was “the combination of means of pacification derived from sound principles of government with the unavoidably hard measures that must break the resistance.” Du Croo noted with irritation that Snouck’s judgement of Swart — “it may well be that he would be in favour of it; behind it he is not, and behind it he will not come” — “still stands recorded in his Collected Writings,” although “the facts and the years from 1918 to 1939 have proved that Swart could indeed do it.”
