Louis Adriaan Snell was a distinguished Dutch military officer who served 16 years as an officer in the Korps Maréchaussée, popularly known in military circles as ‘Old Hand’.
Military Career and Service in Aceh
Snell served through all officer ranks in the Marechaussee. In 1926, he was dispatched from Java to command the West Coast of Aceh Action 1925–1927, successfully restoring colonial order near Meulaboh and Bakongan. He was decorated with the Knight 4th Class Military William Order, two Honourable Mentions, and expedition crosses for Aceh (1906–1910, 1911–1914, 1925–1927) and New Guinea (1907–1915). In 1930, as Colonel commanding the 2nd Infantry Regiment in Bandung, he represented Marechaussee veterans at the 40th anniversary banner ceremony in Kuta Raja.
