Karel van der Heyden was a Dutch general and Civil and Military Governor of Aceh during the early phase of the Aceh War.

Military Career and Service in Aceh

General Van der Heyden conducted major military campaigns across the valley of Groot-Atjeh prior to 1884 and led early assaults against the mountain stronghold at Batèë Ilië. His tenure was followed on 19 August 1884 by the adoption of the defensive Concentratie-Stelsel.

Conquered the whole of Groot-Atjeh. His method of occupying strategic points (rather than holding a concentrated line) was revived in 1893. Warned against premature civilian rule but his warnings were ignored in 1881.
