The Conflict Snouck Hurgronje, Van Heutsz, Van Daalen (1938) was the academic dissertation by J. W. Naarding, published as part XI of the Utrechtsche Bijdragen in 1938, which du Croo called “as a study of sources so complete”.
Du Croo drew from it the summary of Snouck Hurgronje’s three causes of the persistence of the resistance and the statement of the new Atjeh problem, and from its Bijlagen the documentary core of his eighth and ninth chapters: van Heutsz’s assessment of Van Daalen (pp. 62 ff., 65–66), Snouck Hurgronje’s warning letter to Governor-General Rooseboom of 2 October 1903 (pp. 57 ff., 69), and the 1908 correspondence between van Heutsz and minister Idenburg (pp. 151, 168 ff.). Du Croo distanced himself from Naarding’s judgements of van Heutsz’s character, which “were fiercely, and in our opinion not unjustly, contested by many; these are left out of consideration here.”
