Scheurleer is a subject named in General Swart, Pacifier of Atjeh (1943) by M. H. du Croo, in connection with the history of Atjeh and the governorship of H. N. A. Swart.
Account in du Croo’s Generaal Swart (1943)
From Pang Bintang
Swart had earlier, in his letter to Schmidt of 26 September 1911, instructed Scheurleer to gather information about Pang Bintang, attaching him for form’s sake to the Provincial Bureau at Koeta Radja so that he could go wherever he himself thought necessary.
From A. Geertsema Beckeringh
Improvement on the west coast came only “when at last in 1909 the civil authority, the well-known constabulary captain Geertsema Beckeringh, could dispose of sufficient means of power”: a mobile marechaussée column under captain Darlang temporarily occupied first the mouth of the Wòjla and later Boebon; Schmidt cleared up in Teunòm; and the pacification of the difficult Boven Wòjla under Scheurleer and from the bivouac Tanòh Mirah produced the submission of two hundred resistance men, who were helped with rice and seed-padi. Thereafter only Beneden Wòjla, Boebon and Seunagan remained unquiet in the Meulaboh country.
From Koeta Radja
At Koeta Radja stood the Gewestelijk Bureau, to which officers could be attached for form’s sake while operating freely elsewhere, as Scheurleer was in 1911 while collecting information about Pang Bintang. It was to Koeta Radja that H. J. Schmidt came in June 1908 to plead against his posting to Padang Tidji, and there that Swart consulted the Register van Bendehoofden.
Entry in the Maréchaussée register of honours (1930)
The Overzicht van Onderscheidingen printed in the 1930 jubilee number of Het Nieuws van den Dag voor Nederlandsch-Indië records under 1915 the award to 1ste Luit. Mar. H. Scheurleer of the knight’s cross of the Militaire Willems-Orde 4th class — the only entry for that year.
