Rugebregt was a member of the Korps Maréchaussée in Atjeh, one of the non-commissioned members of the corps named by Colonel L. A. Snell among “de dappersten onder de dapperen” — the bravest among the brave.
Snell’s roll of the simple of soul
Interviewed for the 1930 jubilee number of Het Nieuws van den Dag voor Nederlandsch-Indië, Colonel L. A. Snell first named the great pioneers of the corps — Graafland, Van Daalen, Colijn, Swart, Van der Maaten and above all J. B. van Heutsz — and then added: “Maar wanneer ik namen noem, dan dienen ook de eenvoudigen van ziel aan de vergetelheid te worden onttrokken” — but when I name names, then the simple of soul too ought to be rescued from oblivion.
The list he gave was: Marks, Frank, Mosselman, Heynen, Emond, Rugebregt, Salawono, Kasir, Wowor, Nussy and Kromo-di-Koro — “te veel om op te noemen, de dappersten onder de dapperen” — too many to name, the bravest among the brave.
Of such men Snell said that many had fallen, “doch hun geest blijft in het Korps voortleven; de herinnering aan hun daden blijft bewaard” — but their spirit lives on in the corps; the memory of their deeds is preserved.
The jubilee number gives no further particulars of this man beyond his name in that roll.
