P. Hövig was a Dutch mining geologist whose 1914 monograph on the gold ores of the Lebong district of Benkulen — De goudertsen van de Lebongstreek (Benkoelen), in the Jaarboek van het Mijnwezen — is one of the foundational sources for the colonial-era study of the Sumatran gold-silver belt, and whose 1918 report on the iron ores of Sumatra (cited in the standard form “HÖVIG, 1918”) is the principal printed source for the contact-metamorphic theory of the northern-Sumatran iron-ore deposits, including the iron-ore localities of Atjeh at Kr. Geuenteuet and the Muara Sipongi deposits just south of the Atjeh border. Hövig is also cited for the description of the original discovery of the Lebong Donok gold-bearing quartz outcrop near Muara Aman in 1895 or 1896.
The 1914 Lebong monograph
Hövig’s 1914 monograph De goudertsen van de Lebongstreek (Benkoelen) — published in Jaarboek van het Mijnwezen 1912, Verhandelingen, pp. 37–276 (Batavia, 1914) — is the standard colonial description of the gold-silver veins of the Benkulen interior. Van Bemmelen cites it for the observation that “Remains of former native gold mining are numerous and have been found in many places from Atjeh in the North to Benkulen in the South” — a sentence that, whether due to Hövig or to his editor Tobler, fixed the geographical frame of the Sumatran gold-silver belt for all subsequent colonial mineralogical literature.
Hövig’s monograph also describes the discovery of the famous Lebong Donok ore body. In 1895 or 1896 — the printed sources hedge — “European interest for gold in this region arose suddenly due to the fact that Mr. [of] the coffee estate Suban Ajam was shown samples of gold ores by Hadji Ismael of Pasar Tjurup. Then a large outcrop of gold-bearing quartz at Lebong Donok near Muara Aman was shown by native gold washers and this discovery led to the establishment of the ‘Lebong Goud Syndicaat’.” The ore deposits proved to be “the famous Lebong Donok ore body, mining of which was undertaken” by the subsequent enterprise. This is the founding narrative of European gold-mining in the Sumatran gold-silver belt, and it sets the chronological and methodological pattern for the later Atjeh explorations of Jansen, Lindberg and Wolvekamp (1922) and De Groot (1946).
The 1918 iron-ore report
Hövig’s 1918 report — cited throughout Van Bemmelen’s iron-ore chapter as “HÖVIG, 1918” with specific page references (pp. 76, 82, 84, 85, 87, 88) — is the principal printed source for the contact-metamorphic theory of the Sumatran iron-ore deposits. For the Atjeh connection, the relevant citations are:
- For Kr. Geuenteuet (32 km South of Kota Radja): “HÖVIG (1918, p. 87)” — that is, Hövig’s 1918 report contains the first printed description of the Atjeh magnetite-pyrite boulders at the A. Pantom Raba, a tributary of the Kr. Geuenteuet.
- For Muara Sipongi (immediately south of the Atjeh border in Tapanuli): “HÖVIG (1918, p. 85)” — Hövig explicitly argued, against the alternative diabase-contact hypothesis, that “contact-metamorphism was effected by the granite and not by the diabase; the slate-formation on the West side, although adjoined by diabase, has not been altered by contact-metamorphism.” This argument supplied the geological model that the Jansen-Lindberg-Wolvekamp survey would apply to the Atjeh localities in 1922.
Hövig’s 1918 report thus occupies, for the iron-ore geology of northern Sumatra, the same foundational position that his 1914 Lebong monograph occupies for the gold-silver geology of the same region: it is the work that established the analytical framework within which all subsequent colonial mineralogical work on Atjeh was conducted.

Van Bemmelen also cites Hövig for the iron-ore occurrences at Gunung Besie (Bessi) on the Westkust van Sumatra (HÖVIG, 1918, p. 82), at Paningahan on the western bank of Lake Singkarak (p. 84), at Sungei Lassi near Silungkang (p. 84), at Aek Horsik in Tapanuli (p. 85), at the Gunung Ratai deposits in the Lampong Districts (HÖVIG, 1916, and HÖVIG, 1918, p. 88), and at Bukit Raja in Palembang (HÖVIG, 1918, p. 76). The recurrence of his name across the entire length of the Sumatran mineral province — from Atjeh in the north to the Lampong Districts in the south — marks him out as the Geological Survey’s principal field-geologist for the iron-ore question in the second decade of the twentieth century.
Significance
Hövig is significant for the encyclopedia of Acheh history because his 1914 Lebong monograph and 1918 iron-ore report established, respectively, the geological framing of the Sumatran gold-silver belt (which extends from Atjeh to Benkulen) and the contact-metamorphic theory of the northern-Sumatran iron-ore deposits (which the 1922 Atjeh survey of Jansen, Lindberg and Wolvekamp would apply to the Atjeh localities). He is also, with Tobler, one of the two principal printed authorities on the immediate pre-Atjeh mineralogy of the Tapanuli-Muara Sipongi border zone, which is the geological continuation of the Atjeh slate-formation.
