Luitenant Zijdveld was a Dutch officer of the Netherlands East Indies Army serving in the outposts of Groot-Atjeh during the alliance period of 1893–1896, recorded by G. B. Hooijer in De verlaten posten in Groot-Atjeh.
Service in the buitenposten (outer posts)
He was among the officers photographed on the bench at Biloel. On the afternoon of 29 March 1896 he accompanied the patrol of sixty men led by Kapitein Schadée from Biloel towards Tjot Goeë to establish the state of affairs after the defection of Teukoe Oemar. When the point had advanced some three hundred paces beyond the covered ground north of Biloel, it came under heavy fire from all sides across the flooded rice-fields. Zijdveld, struck by a bullet in the lower jaw (een kogel in de onderkaak), was compelled to withdraw, and from that moment the post remained invested by the enemy.
