Atap was the palm-leaf roofing used throughout the Netherlands Indies and, in the Atjeh-oorlog, on the buildings of the Dutch bentings. P. H. R. Beuming glosses it as bladeren van den kokospalm, leaves of the coconut palm.
In his description of the voorpostenbenting Beuming records that within the earthen wall the buildings stood alles met bamboe opgetrokken en gedekt door een dak van atap — all raised in bamboo and covered with a roof of atap — the interior being otherwise extremely primitive. The forward post Biloel was of this construction.
The material’s flammability made it a target. Beuming records that when the enemy began to bring the blockhouse Blang Tjoet under fire in early 1896, on one occasion he brandend rijststroo op het atap-dak slingerde — flung burning rice straw onto the atap roof — and that this was among the incidents that decided the headquarters at Koeta Radja to order the clearing of the surrounding terrain, the operation that became the patrol of 7 March 1896.
