The Relief and lifting of Anagaloeng, Lambarih and Senelop on 18 April 1896 ended the eighteen-day isolation of the Dutch posts in the XXII Moekims of Groot-Atjeh following the defection of Teukoe Oemar, and completed the abandonment of the outpost system built up since 1893.
The siege of Anagaloeng
Hooijer described the patrol of Kapitein Blokland on 7 March 1896 as the prelude to the drama that followed three weeks later, when the post of Anagaloeng — which was to have been converted into a permanently occupied fixed point — was invested by a population that had suddenly turned into enemies. Achttien dagen lang bleef de bezetting daar aan zich zelve overgelaten, gelukkig ruimschoots voorzien van vivres en munitie — for eighteen days the garrison was left to itself, fortunately amply supplied with vivres and ammunition — and only then did a column appear which, after fighting several actions, relieved it.
The lifting
Zonder veel verliezen kon de post den 18 April worden opgeheven en verbrand — without heavy losses the post could be lifted and burnt on 18 April. The same columns relieved and lifted Senelop and Lambarih, after the surrounding population had ranged itself on the side of Toekoe Oemar, who had gone over to the Moslemin, and after the blokhuizen in the neighbourhood had been burnt by the Dutch.
Hooijer’s judgment
The description of the furious struggle then fought fell, Hooijer wrote, outside the framework of a narrative written to explain plates. Met deze posten was tegelijkertijd het werk van twee jaren, dat zooveel goeds scheen te beloven, al was het ook opgetrokken op ondeugdelijken grondslag, in vlammen opgegaan — with these posts the work of two years, which had seemed to promise so much good although raised on an unsound foundation, had at the same time gone up in flames.
