Legioen van Teukoe Oemar was the legion of Acehnese equipped, armed and paid by the Dutch under the command of Teukoe Oemar, whose defection to the resistance party in 1896 produced the catastrophe that ended the governorship of Deijckerhoff.
Deijckerhoff, feeling that complete inactivity could bring no solution, proposed to the Government that “the Acehnese resistance party would be fought by Acehnese well disposed towards us, equipped by us, armed by us and paid by us!” The Government accepted; Teukoe Oemar, “an adventurer … and indisputably untrustworthy,” was appointed oelèëbalang of Leupoeëng and in September 1893 solemnly installed as Panglima Prang Besar. “It began very well: T. Oemar fought with success, and our authority was restored over the greater part of the territory.” Then in 1896 “Panglima Prang Besar T. Oemar went over to the resistance party with the Legion that we had armed and paid.”
