The Reconnaissance in Lepong — verkenning in Lepong op 12 November 1896 — was a Dutch reconnaissance of the Lepong region of Groot-Atjeh, undertaken on 12 November 1896, five days before the formal handover of command from Stemfoort to Van Vliet. The reconnaissance was one of the first operations of the transitional Van Vliet period, and was designed to maintain pressure on the region in which Toekoe Oemar had been located by the excursie to Lepong and Lohong of 10–14 August 1896. The reconnaissance was followed, on 29 November 1896, by the trip to Tibang-Poei and Birah — the operation to recover the artillery lost on 17 April 1896 during the battle of Senelop.
Significance
The Reconnaissance in Lepong of 12 November 1896 is significant in the documentary record of ATJEH ‘96 — Tweede Deel as one of the first operations of the transitional Van Vliet period. The reconnaissance — undertaken five days before the formal handover of command — maintained Dutch pressure on the Lepong region, and demonstrated the continuity of the Dutch pacificatie (pacification) policy across the transition from Stemfoort to Van Vliet.
