W. J. P. van Waning was a Captain ter zee who commanded the Dutch naval squadron comprising Hr.Ms. “Pri Hendrik der Nederlanden”, Hr.Ms. “Mataram”, Hr.Ms. “Nias”, and Hr.Ms. “Batavia” during the 1896 expedition against Pedir (place) and the Selimoen-colonne.

Command

His squadron provided riverine transport and fire support for the landing division during the 1896 campaign in the Aceh highlands.

Significance

Van Waning’s leadership illustrates the integration of naval firepower into Dutch ground operations during the later phases of the Aceh War.
