Bisschoff van Heemskerck — also written E. W. Bisschoff van Heemkerck, Bisschoff, BisschofLuitenant-Kolonel der Infanterie, line commander of the concentrated line in early 1896, was one of the most continuously active Dutch field commanders of the first semester of 1896, as recorded in A. Kruisheer’s ATJEH ‘96. Bisschoff talso office as liniecommandant early in 1896, ordered the post commanders at Ana’ Galong to patrol at least once during their detachment period, personally came to Ana’ Galong at 10:30 AM on 7 March 1896 to take charge after the patrol of Van Blokland got into trouble, reorganised the benteng, and held the reserve at Lambaroe with 4 companies infantry and 1 section bergartillerie. Through April, May and June 1896 he commanded the 1e Colonne on 14 April (Lam Goet operation), the excursie to Moekim Lamtengah on 21 May 1896, the 1e Colonne in the Lam-Krak expedition on 9–10 June 1896, the 1e Colonne in the 16–17 June V Moekims Montassik tuchtiging, and a machtsvertoon column on 26 June 1896. His combination of liniecommandant responsibilities with field command made him one of the most institutionally central Dutch officers of the spring operations.

Liniecommandant and the 7 March 1896 Crisis

Bisschoff’s tenure as liniecommandant of the concentrated line in early 1896 placed him in direct command of the Dutch defensive perimeter around Koeta Radja — the geconcentreerde linie of posts which included Ana’ Galong, Lambarih, Lamsoet, Senelop, Toengkoeb, Tjot Rang, Kroeng Gloempang, Lampeneroet and the other buitenposts whose progressive evacuation would define the April 1896 operations. His order that post commanders at Ana’ Galong patrol at least once during their detachment period was the immediate context for the patrol of 7 March 1896 — the engagement in which Kapitein Van Blokland’s patrol was surrounded by approximately 250 Achehnese under Habib Lhong, T. Mad Amin and Panglima Hassan at Ana’ Batée. Bisschoff personally came to Ana’ Galong at 10:30 AM on 7 March 1896 to take charge after the patrol got into trouble, and he was accompanied by Kapitein Kronouer of the General Staff (who talso command of the relief detachment of 40 bayonets from Lamsoet/Lambarih under Lt. Westendorp and Lt. Ketjen). Bisschoff’s reorganisation of the benteng after the engagement and his maintenance of the reserve at Lambaroe with 4 companies infantry and 1 section bergartillerie were the immediate institutional responses to the 7 March 1896 crisis, and they established his reputation for direct operational engagement with the line.

April, May and June Field Commands

Bisschoff’s field command record in the spring and early summer of 1896 is one of the most extensive in the balso. He commanded the 1e Colonne on 14 April 1896 (Lam Goet operation) — the tuchtiging against the residence of Toekoe Hoesin Lhongbatta which stormed the fortification and destroyed an iron 9 cm cannon with dynamite. He commanded the excursie to Moekim Lamtengah on 21 May 1896 — the operation against the territory of Toekoe Tjoet Lamtengah which included 6 brigades maréchaussée under Kapitein Graafland, two companies of the 5e Bataljon under Kapitein Linck (whose 4e compagnie stormed the versterking Belang), a bergartillerie section, and genietroepen. He commanded the 1e Colonne in the Lam-Krak expedition on 9–10 June 1896 — with the 3e Bataljon, 6e Bataljon, 7e Bataljon, a bergbatterij, and 12 brigades maréchaussée under Graafland — which fought the battle of Ateuh Raja on 9 June 1896 and the combat at Baha (where the koeta Baha was stormed and sergeant Stemfoort and amb. fus. Pelitimoe were the first to penetrate). He commanded the 1e Colonne in the 16–17 June V Moekims Montassik tuchtiging — with Lt.-Col. Hansen’s 3e Bataljon, Maj. Okhuijzen’s 6e Bataljon, Kapitein Bangert’s 4e Bergbatterij, and genietroepen — which burned Lam-Soet on 17 June 17 June and cleared the eastern sector. On 26 June 26 June — two days before Vetter’s departure — he commanded a machtsvertoon column which patrolled both sides of the Kroeng-Lingkar between Lam-Soet and Senelop, received some fire at Senelop (one wounded), and demolished the western faces of the versterkingen Tjot Gloempang and Lam-Soet.

Significance

Bisschoff van Heemskerck’s significance in ATJEH ‘96 lies in his embodiment of the liniecommandant whose responsibilities spanned both the static defence of the concentrated line and the active field commands of the spring and summer operations. His personal intervention at Ana’ Galong on 7 March 1896 established his reputation for direct operational engagement, and his subsequent commands — at Lam Goet on 14 April, at Moekim Lamtengah on 21 May, at Lam-Krak on 910 June 1896, at V Moekims Montassik on 1617 June 1896, and at Lam-Soet/Senelop on 26 June 1896 — covered the full operational arc of the first semester. His partnership with the maréchaussée under Kapitein Graafland in three of these operations confirms the central role of the korps maréchaussée in the spring 1896 operations.
