The Kapitein van den Staf — the Captain of the Staff — was the unnamed Dutch staff officer who accompanied the liniecommandant (commander of the line) to the relief of Kapitein Blokland’s mauled patrol before Anagaloeng on 7 March 1896, and whose flanking movement saved the surviving men.

G. B. Hooijer recorded that after Blokland’s party had retired to within 350 paces of the post and there stood fast, unable to carry its dead and wounded further, the liniecommandant appeared, having come from Senelop on hearing the heavy firing and having taken up forty men from Lam Soet and Lambarih on the way. Den Kapitein van den Staf, die hem vergezelde, gelukte het, door zijwaarts een positie in te nemen, het vuur der Moslemin tot zich te trekken en zoodoende den gekwetsten Blokland met zijn dooden en gewonden en zijn twintig ongekwetste manschappen gelegenheid te geven in den post te wijken — the Captain of the Staff who accompanied him succeeded, by taking up a position on the flank, in drawing the fire of the Moslemin upon himself, and thus gave the wounded Blokland the opportunity to withdraw into the post with his dead and wounded and his twenty unwounded men.
