J. H. Hoeksteijn was a Dutch 1st lieutenant of the Netherlands Indies Army who was wounded on 8 April 1896 in the excursion to restore communication with the besieged forward posts Biloel and Lamkoenjit, the day after the arrival of the Java troops with General Vetter. The march cost the life of Captain F. P. A. Geluk and three European and four native fusiliers; wounded with Hoeksteijn was 1st Lieutenant R. ten Seldam, together with ten European and thirteen native fusiliers.
