A gezondheidsetablissement — a health establishment or sanatorium — was a colonial convalescent station, and by 1911 one had been established at Kroeng Raba on the west coast of Groot-Atjeh.
P. H. R. Beuming notes the fact in his description of the Kroeng Raba bay, which he calls first among the picturesque landscapes of Groot-Atjeh: Omgeven door een rotsachtig hoog gebergte, steeds onder het bereik van den frisschen zeewind, is het klimaat er overheerlijk. Tegenwoordig bevindt zich dan ook aldaar een gezondheidsetablissement — surrounded by a rocky high mountain range and constantly within reach of the fresh sea wind, the climate there is delightful; at present, accordingly, a health establishment is found there.
The remark measures the distance between the Kroeng Raba of the 1896 garrison — where the benting Lho-Nga lay lonely at the river mouth, no warship venturing to approach the dangerous coast — and the pacified district of 1911.
